What Causes a Panic Attack?
The exact causes of panic attacks or panic disorder is not known. Some things that may be involved are:
Genetics
Stress
Certain changes in the way parts of your brain function
It’s not known why a panic attack occurs when there is no obvious danger present. The body’s natural fight-or-flight response to danger may be involved when a panic attack occurs. So if you are attacked by a barking dog, for example, your heart rate and breathing would speed up as the body prepares for a life-threatening situation. These are the same reactions that occur in a panic attack.
My Story
I have had several bouts with panic attacks resulting in a trip to the emergency room! In one instance, I woke up in the middle of the night with by heart beating like a bass drum. I laid there for a while thinking it would pass but it didn’t. Then I got up and walked around the house and even to the back deck for some fresh air. Nothing helped. So I woke up my wife (a retired RN) and told her what was going on. She immediately took me to the ER where I was escorted to an exam room. They did all of the heart attack tests and determined that I was not having a heart attack. The diagnosis? Panic attack! How embarrassing!
In searching for cures for panic and anxiety attacks, most of what I found involved expensive medications or deep breathing exercises.
